Comprehensive Counseling ProgramThe following is a brief description of some of the services available to students, parents, and staff from the counseling office. There are many way in which counselors intervene with students and their families. Here are just a few ways:Classroom Lessons: Many times throughout the year we teach or co-teach lessons in various subject areas. This may include lessons on anti-bullying, drug use and prevention, suicide prevention and awareness, diversity and acceptance, college and career readiness etc.Individual Counseling: We provide one-on-one couseling on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Some areas of counseling may include, family issues, friendships, self-confidence and identity, stress and anxiety, follow-ups from discipline referrals or HIB behvaiors.Group Counseling: We provide counseling in a small group setting based on various needs and goals. This may be a grief group, anger management, gender-specific groups and/or co-ed groups, stress management etc.Crisis Management: In the event of a crisis we intervene imediately to ensure the safety of the student and others. We connect with parents and outside agencies for resources and support. We do this in collaboration with the school nurse and school administrators.Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS): We are the grade level coordinators for the I&RS committee. This means we oversee the referral process and collaborate with teachers and specialists to create a plan addressing the needs of students.504 Accomodation Plan: We are the case managers for students with 504 plans. We work with families and teachers to make sure the needs of our students with 504's are met in the classroom and the school building. Click here for a quick descriptor of what a 504 Accomodation Plan is: 504's and IEP's; What's the difference?Conflict Resolution: On a daily basis we intervene with students to address the more typical and everyday conflicts children have. This may look like a one time conversation, small group mediation or a few meetings to discuss behavior or issues in a class etc. Many times these are normal growing pains and teachable moments. Please take a look at our counseling department services and interventions in this handy flyer: MES Counseling FlyerA child may see the Counselor for:- academic difficulties
