blue and gray
  • The Blue & Gray is the Manasquan High School student newspaper.  We publish approximately once every 1-2 months, producing 6-8 papers over the course of the school year.    Once you enroll in Journalism Workshop, you are no longer an ordinary MHS student, but a staff member of the The Blue & Gray.  You are expected to be a team member, to work productively with others, and to represent our publication with respect.  You are a problem-solver who not only writes but researches, interviews, proofreads, makes numerous decisions, designs pages, takes pictures and more.  You are granted tremendous independence - for instance, to leave class and conduct interviews, or to choose stories you will write.  Some days are spent learning how to write different types of stories, such as reviews or profiles or news stories, but most days are spent managing responsibilities.  Staff members know what they need to do to meet deadlines, and arrive to class ready to work without being told what to do.  While one student is writing, another might be proofreading and another interviewing the superintendent!  To the best extent possible, it is a "professional environment" rather than a classroom.  Talk to many former students and they will tell you:  being in Journalism Workshop and writing for The Blue & Gray was one of their high school highlights!
