Manasquan School District
Acceptable Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence Plan

The Board of Education has adopted Policy Guide 2365 – Acceptable Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) which requires the development of this Acceptable Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence Plan (AI Plan).  This AI Plan supplements Policy Guide 2365 as it provides the details of the general provisions included in Policy Guide 2365 and adopted by the Board.

Provide an explanation on when, how, and to what extent a staff member may permit a student to use AI in assignments.

Staff members may look to integrate AI tools into the curriculum to enhance student learning experiences and support educational objectives.  Staff members should ensure that the use of AI tools by students is to support learning and not to promote academic dishonesty, as specified by the Academic Integrity Policy.

When selecting AI tools for students, staff members should consider usability and educational values.  AI tools should be grade-appropriate and align with the grade level curriculum.

The use of AI tools may be permitted for specific assignments.  When allowed, staff members should communicate the proper use of AI for the assignment or include these details in the assignment instructions.  Unless otherwise stated, the expectation is that AI tools are not to be used. Students must verify the information obtained from AI tools by cross-referencing sources.  It is the student’s responsibility to confirm the details provided by AI tools and ensure accuracy.

Staff members may develop assignments using AI tools including, but not limited to, the following ways:

  • AI prompt engineering and teaching proper and effective usage
  • Researching and evaluating sources
  • Analyzing text
  • Improving writing
  • Improving study habits and practices

Even when the use of AI is permitted for an assignment, students are expected to demonstrate independent, authentic work and uphold the standards of academic integrity. When AI generated work is utilized, students should cite the source properly, as detailed in this plan.

Provide the procedure for the Superintendent or designee and the AI Coordinator(s) in the district to approve and review a list of recommended AI tools and a process to allow teaching staff members to make recommendations of AI tools for inclusion on or removal from the list.

Teachers may choose to utilize AI tools in the classroom when deemed beneficial to student learning.  Teachers should evaluate AI tools for assignments and student work and ensure that all suggested tools are grade-level appropriate.

Included in this plan is a list of recommended AI tools, along with a brief description of each use.  Should teachers find additional AI tools that they believe will be helpful for other classrooms, they may submit their recommendation to the AI Coordinator, who will evaluate the tool and determine if it should be added to the recommended list.  This list will be digitally accessible for all staff members and updated appropriately.

Provide the procedure to inform parents in the beginning of each school year for the student to be permitted to use AI for assignments in accordance with Policy 2365 – Acceptable Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and this AI Plan.

Policy 2365 requires that parents be informed at the beginning of each school year for the student to be permitted to use AI for assignments in accordance with the policy and this plan. The district uses the Genesis Student Information System Parent Portal to disseminate several required notices and forms and requires parents to acknowledge them as a condition of access to the Parent Portal.

The district will distribute a link to Policy 2365 and this AI Plan with an accompanying explanation as a Parent Portal form or an additional item on an existing form to inform parents of the policy and this plan. The form will require electronic acknowledgement by the parent as a condition of access to the Parent Portal. The principal of each school will make accommodations for providing these forms in an alternative format to parents who may not have access to the Parent Portal consistent with how other required forms are provided.

Provide a list of prohibited uses of AI that violate Policy 2365 – Acceptable Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or the district’s Code of Student Conduct, which may include any use of AI which does not align with the conditions set when the assignment was provided to the student; using AI to complete an assignment in a way that falsely represents the assignment as the student’s own; using AI to purposefully create misinformation or to misrepresent others with the intent of harming, bullying, or intimidating an individual(s); using AI with confidential student or staff personal information; and other prohibited behaviors and/or conduct listed in Policy and Regulation 2361 – Acceptable Use of Computer Networks/ Computers and Resources.

Academic Dishonesty Facilitation: Using AI tools to complete assessments, essays, or assignments without teacher approval or as a substitute for original student work. AI tools may be used for support or inspiration but cannot be cited as primary sources for information, except when directed by the teacher. All essays, lab reports, and other written assignments must be completed in the student’s own words. Similarly, all mathematical submissions must be the student’s own work. Submitting AI-generated content as original work is strictly prohibited and will be considered a violation of the district’s academic integrity policy.

Bypassing Curriculum or Instruction: Employing AI to circumvent participation in learning activities (e.g., using AI to generate summaries instead of reading assigned texts).

Use for non-academic purposes: AI tools will be used for educational purposes only. Misuse or malicious use of AI technologies will lead to disciplinary action, which may include, but not limited to the consequences listed in Policy and Regulation 2361 – Acceptable Use of Computer Networks/ Computers and Resources. Including but not limited to:

Inappropriate or Harmful Content Generation: Generating or sharing AI-created content that is violent, explicit, misleading, or otherwise inappropriate for the school environment.

Impersonation or Misrepresentation: Using AI to impersonate individuals (e.g., fake emails, deepfakes, or forged writing) or to mislead others in an educational context.

Undermining Teacher Authority or Expectations: Using AI to challenge, reinterpret, or alter teacher-provided instructions or feedback without permission (e.g., rewriting rubrics, regrading assignments).

List the consequences if a student violates any provision of Policy 2365 - Acceptable Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or this AI Plan.

Violations of Policy 2365 or this plan constitute a violation of academic integrity and are subject to the consequences of Policy 5701. Such violations must be addressed under Policy and Regulation 5600, Student Discipline/Code of Conduct. Under Policy 5600, the Building Principal or designee shall have the authority to assign discipline to students. A Chart of Discipline, authorized by Regulation 5600 and approved by the Board of Education, lists school responses to violations of behavioral expectations. The Chart of Discipline shall include consequences for violations of Policy 2365, 5701, or this plan.
