• 6th grade students will begin a guitar exploration unit during their music rotation. We will begin with learning the parts of the guitar, how to hold the instrument and work our way up to playing songs on 3 or 4 strings, chords, and scales. Students will receive various guitar performance assessments during the course of the marking period to determine level of skill on the instrument. Students will be assessed using a guitar performance rubric. The rubric is as follows:
     
    1.     Performs well below benchmark for grade level (84 and below)
    2.       Performs slightly below benchmark for grade level (85-92%)
    3.       Performs at benchmark for grade level (93%)
    4.       Performs above benchmark for grade level (94-100%)

     

    Benchmark

    SWBAT: Properly interpret rhythm of musical selection

    SWBAT: Distinguish proper fret and fingering

    SWBAT: Maintain a steady tempo throughout performance

    SWBAT: Determine the proper note, string and fret to play

     

    Modifications

    Developing students can modify guitar sheet music by using the following:

    1.       1. Assign string letter and finger number to each note in their music.

    2.       2. Create a guitar TAB for the piece of music being performed or assessed.

     

     

    Song #1 (Etude # 2)

    Above Benchmark plus the following:

    SWBAT: Properly identify and play the notes E, F, G on the E string of the guitar using fingers 1 and 3

     

    Song #2 (Merry Men)

    Benchmark plus the following:

    SWBAT: Properly identify and play the notes E, F, G on the E string and B, C, D on the B string using fingers 1 and 3

    SWBAT: Distinguish the beat and meter of ¾ time

     

      

    Song # 3 (Aura Lee)

    Benchmark plus the following:

    SWBAT: Properly identify and play the notes E, F, G on the E string, B, C, D on the B string, and G, A on the G string using fingers 1,2 and 3

     

    Scale Assessment (A minor/ C major)

    Benchmark plus the following:

    SWBAT: Properly identify and play the notes E, F, G on the E string, B, C, D on the B string, and G, A on the G string using fingers 1,2 and 3

    SWBAT: Shift from first hand position into second hand position on the high E string to complete the scales.

     

    Chord Assessment (C, G, G7, D*)

    Benchmark plus the following:

    SWBAT: Properly fret the notes that make up the chords C, G, G7 and if time allows D.

    SWBAT: Strum the G, B, e strings (high 3 strings) of the guitar to sound the notes of the chord

     

    Song #4 (Ode to Joy)

    Benchmark plus the following:

    SWBAT: Properly identify and play the notes E, F, G on the E string, B, C, D on the B string, and G, A on the G string using fingers 1,2 and 3

    SWBAT: Provide chordal accompaniment to the song Ode to Joy using 3 string chords C, G, G7
